Teresa Ann Degner, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, just one day shy of her 76th birthday. Born on June 2, 1950, at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, Teresa’s life was a testament to love, dedication, and a spirited embrace of life’s many joys.
Growing up on the family farm in Clutier, Iowa, Teresa developed a deep connection to the land and community that shaped her early years. She attended Clutier schools until the eighth grade and graduated from North Tama High School in 1968. During her school years, Teresa was an avid athlete, participating enthusiastically in softball and basketball, passions she warmly passed down to her children and grandchildren, fostering a family culture rich in love and competition.
After high school, Teresa pursued her education at Marshalltown Community College, where she earned an Associate’s degree in Applied Science and a Business Certificate with a concentration in Clerical Services in 1970. Her professional journey began at Don Danskin Cadillac, Pontiac, and GMC, where her strong work ethic and friendly demeanor were evident. Teresa’s entrepreneurial spirit blossomed when she purchased and ran the Traer Tasty Treats, a beloved local establishment. Later, she continued her career at Traer Manufacturing and Universal Industries in Cedar Falls until her well-earned retirement in 2018.
On February 24, 1979, Teresa was joyfully united in marriage to Kenneth Degner, marking the beginning of a loving partnership that spanned 47 years. Together, they made their home in Traer, Iowa, raising two sons, Matthew and Michael. Teresa’s devotion to her family was unwavering. She found immense joy in the lives of her five grandchildren—Jack, Liz, Alice, Miles, and Mason—whom she cherished deeply. Whether attending countless activities, celebrating birthdays, or creating magical Christmases and treasured vacations, Teresa’s warmth and attentiveness made every moment special.
Beyond her family, Teresa had a zest for life that extended to hobbies she dearly loved. She found peace by the water fishing, delighted in shopping trips, enjoyed watching movies, and treasured the simple pleasure of sharing meals surrounded by those she loved.
Teresa is survived by her devoted husband, Kenny of Traer, IA; her sons, Matthew (Kate) of Iowa City, IA and Michael (Kim) of Cedar Rapids, IA; and her cherished grandchildren, Jack, Liz, Alice, Miles, and Mason. She also leaves behind her brothers Duane (Gail) and Sylvester Jr. (Karen) Upah, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws, all of whom grieve her loss yet celebrate the enduring legacy of her love and spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Betty and Sylvester Upah.
Services to honor Teresa’s life per her wishes will be held on Monday, June 8, with a visitation from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Overton Funeral Home in Traer, Iowa, followed by the service starting at 6 p.m.
Teresa Ann Degner’s life was a radiant tapestry of love, resilience, and joy. Her passing leaves a space impossible to fill, but her memory will forever illuminate the hearts of all who knew her.
