Gregory Lee Drajna, a cherished soul whose life was marked by service, love, and unwavering kindness, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa. At the age of 76, Greg left behind a legacy rich with memories that will be treasured by all who knew him.

Born on November 24, 1949, in Bertha, Minnesota, Greg was the beloved son of Andrew and Edna (Sapp) Drajna. His formative years were spent in the serene landscapes of Minnesota, where he graduated from Eveleth Senior High School in 1967. Driven by a passion for the arts, he pursued studies in photography at both the Minnesota School of Business and the Wilmar Area Vocational Technical Institute graduating in 1980 with a associate’s degree in professional photography technology.

Greg’s commitment to his country was deeply profound. In 1969, he was drafted into the Army and served bravely during the Vietnam War, stationed in Thailand and Turkey. His valor earned him multiple honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Citation. With pride in his service, he was honorably discharged in November of 1975.

Returning to Minnesota, Greg immersed himself in film work in Minneapolis and broadened his horizons by attending the University of Minnesota. It was here that he met Jan Hedden, with whom he shared the joy of raising a beautiful daughter, Katie. Though their paths eventually diverged, the bond with Katie remained strong and enduring.

In 1994, Greg found his way to Iowa and to the love of his life, Cynthia Starry. Greg and Cynthia dated when they were just youngsters. That love rekindled later in life, and she was the reason for the move and their marriage in 1996 was a testament to a profound and pure love. Greg’s devotion to Cynthia was boundless, it was magical; he was her steadfast supporter, often by her side at quilt shows and classes, humorously claiming to be there to “keep the ladies in line.” Cynthia’s passing on St. Patrick’s Day in 2023 left an irreplaceable void in Greg’s heart, and his health sadly began to decline thereafter.

Greg’s dedication extended well beyond his family. As a proud member and Post Commander of the American Legion Post 142 in Traer, he served his fellow veterans with honor. Whether he was partaking in the honor guard in military rites, participating in “Missing Man” tables at events, or presenting the flag at Traer High School Friday night games, Greg’s presence was a symbol of respect and patriotism.

His generosity was felt throughout the community. Greg’s volunteer spirit knew no bounds — whether serving at the Salt and Pepper Shaker or offering rides to those in need, he was always there with a helping hand. As a devoted member of the Traer United Methodist Church, he embraced friendships and touched the hearts of many with his warmth.

Outside of his commitments, Greg found joy in the simple pleasures of fishing, playing golf, and taking peaceful walks — moments that reflected his gentle and reflective nature.

Gregory Lee Drajna was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Edna; his beloved wife, Cynthia; and his brother, Fred Drajna.

He leaves behind a loving family to carry his memory forward: his treasured daughter, Katie (Ted) Johnson, of Colorado, along with his two grandchildren; his brother, David Drajna, of Minnesota; and his sisters, Mary Ellen Drajna of Minnesota and Louise (Ray) Schley of South Dakota. His legacy is further embraced by numerous family members and friends who were fortunate to know his generous spirit.

A Celebration of Life will take place this coming fall, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember a man who gave so much of himself and whose heart was full of love.

Gregory Lee Drajna’s life was a testament to courage, devotion, and kindness—a story that will forever inspire.
