Craig A. Peters was born on November 24, 1946, at Allen Hospital, in Waterloo, the son of Lowell and Betty (Kies) Peters. The family lived in Hudson when he was born and moved to Dysart in 1949. In 1965, the year he graduated from Geneseo High School, they moved to a farm south of Dysart. Craig took care of cattle and hogs when he was a kid on the farm and drove truck right out of high school. He then worked in Alaska for a survey company on the north slope for about a year. Craig served his country in the Army Reserves from 1966 to 1971 and ran a switchboard. He worked for Elliot Brothers for several years, then had his own trucking business for many years after that. He loved fishing, the Chicago Cubs, and attending his kids’ sporting events. Craig’s pride and joy was his family and kids. He would put people at ease, loved to joke around, and was a self-proclaimed jokester. His family will always remember his unique food choices. He was also very proud of his sobriety, becoming sober in 1982. Craig accepted Jesus into his life in 1983. He loved the Lord; his faith was the most important to him. On May 20, 1983, Craig was united in marriage to Marilyn Dake in La Porte City and made their home in Dysart. They enjoyed going to their kids’ sporting events, riding the motorcycle, camping, dancing, gardening, and were very involved in the church. He also enjoyed taking his family with him in the truck. Craig was proud of the bond and connection that his big family has, and always prioritized family get togethers, birthday parties and holidays. They attended the Assembly of God Church in Dysart for many years. In 1992, they started attending Great Commission Church in Marshalltown. In 1995, they moved to Gladbrook. Craig retired from trucking in 2016. He spent a lot of time with his grandkids. They were the highlight of his life, always asking to see them and what they were up to. In the last year of his life, as his health declined, he was residing at Accura Healthcare in Marshalltown. Craig went home to be with the Lord, with his family by his side, on October 29, 2023, at the age of 76. Craig will be missed by his wife of 40 years, Marilyn; his children, Dannielle (Tim) Coon, Lanette (Bowen) Martin, Shane (Anna) Peters, Andrew (Mary) Peters, Josh (Krystle) Peters, Natalie (Kent) Theesfeld, and Angela (Trey) Winkowitsch; his 23 grandchildren with 2 on the way; 4 great grandchildren; a brother, Kevin (Cindy) Peters; and a nephew, James Peters. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Steven. There will be a memorial service on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 1:00 PM, at Overton Funeral Home in Traer. The visitation will be prior to the service from 11:00 to 1:00 PM, also at Overton Funeral Home. Please direct memorials to Craig’s family.
